If by expository essay, you mean a compare and contrast or an analysis of a concept for the sake of putting forth an educated opinion about the theme provided in the writing task, then yes it could work. We've had students who came back to us with excellent Section 2 scores, and they used one format (argumentative or discursive) for both writing tasks. You see, one of the main requirements in Section 2 is for a candidate to be able to express an opinion on a given theme. Of course, in order to earn a good mark, you must be able to demonstrate that your opinion is based on logic and reason, hence the need for highly relevant, qualified and well-discussed examples.
