Question 1

Question 1

Postby kviero » Thu Nov 10, 2011 11:07 pm

Question 1: 1) What force is required to lift a 16-lb block vertically with an acceleration of 16 ft/s2?

This is most likely VERY simple so apologies but after finding out that m=1/2 from W=mg why do u not just plug in m in the equation F= ma, in which you would get 8 as the answer.

I guess just asking why does the sum of F=ma + mg in this problem.

mg is just the weight. So, for example, your chair must push against your body with a force exactly equal to the weight mg that it experiences. But are you moving? No. Are you accelerating upwards? No. In order to do that, you need mg + ma.

In the future, please post in the thread which was already created for the particular chapter that you have a question about. This is necessary to keep the forum organized. Thanks for your understanding.
